Description

Lees Creek in the Raglan Ranges is one of the prettiest valleys in the region and NTC last went there 3 years ago. We will head up the Rainbow Road through the locked gate just past the skifield road (gate fee to be paid). Park up by the swing bridge to cross the Wairau river and head up the Lee valley on a good track. Depending on time, energy and weather, we will camp by the Lees Creek hut (4 bunks; 8-9 km) or bit further up the valley on the tussock flats. Early start on Sunday morning to explore part of the upper valley. Perhaps into the East branch and the upper basins above the waterfall towards the tops. Return to camp for lunch then we up-pack, down-valley returning to the vehicles.

Alternate fit trip. Andrea will lead a sub-party on into the upper Lee valley and camp at either the top forks or the tarns under Pt 2045 (8-10 hrs). On Sunday go up and over a saddle at 2010m on the Mangerton ridge. Then drop down into the lower Lee on shingle slides, hitting the track about 2 km down from the hut. This is a spectcular loop. The plan is to share transport and start together. In Andrea's immortal words:

Lees Creek Plus
We will forge past the hut taking any foolhardy souls and armed with "It's do-able" knowledge plus a sketchy map. We will have a beautiful night in our elevated grand bivouac. As Scorpius dips and Orion rises we will to bed to await the next days adventures.Gaiters wont go admiss. After the cruisy jaunt past the hut, the second part of the first day and the first part of the second day will be grunty. You will need a bit more fuel in your bod although we wont be travelling fast. We will send a rubber duckie down from the high tarns to signal our arrival to basecamp.
