Sloggers Tramp to Cupola & Upper Travers Huts, Nelson Lakes region

The Sloggers not Bloggers from the Waikato Tramping Club (WTC) are planning a combined trip with the Nelson branch of the WTC, i.e. Debbie H, Peter P & Michelle C. All members of the NTC are invited to become a slogger for the week. Sloggers will arrive from Hamilton on the weekend of 24-25 September for a jolly weekend in Nelson.

Early Monday morning drive to St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes region, (1 hour 30 minutes by road from Nelson) where we will take the boat over Lake Rotoiti to Lakehead Hut for morning tea time. Gentle walk up the Travers River valley in lovely forest to John Tait Hut (27 bunks), 4 hr 30 min.

Depending on size of party may need to split into 2 groups, for the next few days. One party will climb to Cupola Hut (8 bunks), with superb views of Mount Hopeless. Hopefully snow to “play” in. 2 hours 30 minutes of strenuous climbing from John Tait hut. The second group will walk to Upper Travers Hut (24 bunks), 3 hr walk, where we may find snow if we are lucky. Explore the areas around the huts, which could include climbing the Travers Saddle which is an alpine pass requiring ice axe and crampons in winter and well into spring. The saddle is 450 metres above the hut, about 1 hour 30 minutes walking, when not in snow.

Groups to swop huts before reuniting at John Tait hut for Thursday night. Retrace our steps down the Travers River valley on Friday and back to Nelson. Exact schedule will depend on snow conditions and may include a trip to Angelus Hut as appropriate.

Some experience in snow conditions an advantage. Medium fitness and must be able to give and receive a joke. Can borrow crampons and ice axes from NTC.
