Description

This excellent 4-day round trip was pioneered by Ruth and Dion in 2010. It circumnavigates Scotts Knob. Varied and interesting country with quite a bit of up and down but nothing technical and no long days. Access is via the Branch River valley off the Leatham River from Wairau valley.

Day 1: Ford the Leatham and up Branch rough road (preferably in 4WDs with shuffle of a vehicle to Griegs hut). Cross the Branch River near the confluence with Silverstream. Follow the bush track to Mid Silverstream Hut. (approx. 6km, 4 hours)

Day 2: Continue up the valley then climb steeply through bush by side-stream onto a spur which leads to a tussock and tarn speckled basin. Cross over a small saddle and descend down Bull Paddock Stream to the small 2 person Biv. (approx 7km, 6 - 7 hours)

Day 3: Climb back onto the Raglan Range above the Biv, traverse a basin then descend into Lost Stream and the beautifully situated 2 person Biv, part way down the valley. (approx. 5km, 5 - 6 hours)

Day 4: Follow the track to the Branch, down and cross swingbridge back out to Griegs hut and 4WD road.  (approx. 15km, 4 -5 hours)
