Description

Experience the open tussock tops without the normal effort required to get there. Track departs at road summit of Lewis Pass (900m), and quickly gets above the bushline, traversing around The Apprentice (1638m). Relatively benign travel along a tarn-studded ridge along to Brass Monkey Biv (2 bunks, 1300m) - may need tents here. Sundays sees us leisurely romp along the tops and down into a saddle with Rough Creek, and the headwaters of the Blue Grey River. Follow this to the hut near Lake Christabel. On Anniversary Day, we'll return to Lewis Pass highway via the poled route down Rough Creek. Total distance over 3 days x 9km/day = 27km. Day 1 & 3 have 700m climbs.
