Venue: Underwater Club rooms, Hastings St, beside Pioneer Park, Nelson city.

Guest speaker: Peter Laurenson, the Editor of the FMC Backcountry magazine. He has recently moved from windy Wellington to live in Richmond, so let's give his a warm Nelson welcome :-)

Peter will present the spectacular images from his second book, KHUMBU Pathways to Kinship in August 2021.

His story encompasses seven trekking journeys spanning more than thirty years to Khumbu, the Nepalese gateway to Mount Everest and home to the Sherpa people. His story is also about a journey to kinship between a Kiwi family and a Sherpa family; a journey through tourism expansion, the emergence of guided climbs to the summit of Mount Everest, economic and technological development and environmental, cultural and political change; and a journey shared by a father and each of his three sons. It also carries a message that is well timed as we slowly work our way to the far end of the COVID tunnel.

His book was the Mountain and Adventure Heritage Category winner at the 2022 NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival at Wanaka. Leading New Zealand mountaineer Guy Cotter wrote the Foreword and wrote this about his photographs: ‘The images are wonderful to the point I find myself looking so deeply into them that I feel like I am actually there again, slightly short of breath, but full of gratitude.’

Brief bio

Peter has been a member of NZAC since 2002.

Since his first backpacking trip away from New Zealand in 1988, Peter has visited and photographed many mountainous parts of the world, but none have had such an impact on him as Nepal.
The website www.occasionalclimber.co.nz showcases his mountain and travel adventures. In 2013 he published his first book Occasional Climber: A Journey to Mount Clarity.
