Description

Myself and two members of the family, plus a friend (from Germany) aim to walk the Heaphy track. We intend starting at the Golden Bay (northern) end on Thursday 13th September and come out to the Karamea end on Sunday 16th September.

I have already booked the four hut nights for the four of us. We aim to spend the first night at Perry Saddle (from Browns Hut it is 17.5kms and 5 hours walking), the second night at Saxon (from Perry Saddle Hut it is 12.4kms and 3 1/2 hours walking), the third night at Lewis Hut (from Saxon it is 24.3 kms and 6 1/2 hours walking), and final day is out to Kohaihai road end (from Lewis Hut 24.2 kms walking 7.5 hours). It is still 10kms to Karamea township but shuttle services are available.

Other members from the club are welcome to join our party, or if some would prefer, start from the southern end (Karamea). This would make transport more manageable.

The cost of the huts is $32 per night and MUST be booked in advance of departing. Easiest way to do this is go on-line  www.doc.govt.nz   It seems that James MacKay Hut is a very popular hut, as already there are few beds left there on Friday and Saturday nights 14th and 15th September - the other huts though have plenty of space.
