| Stay at Kaihoka Farm stay Homestead. Do day walks in the surounding hills. Very close to Wharariki Beach, 25min drive from Collingwood. There are various tramping options that differ in length and difficulty. We have booked the Homestead on Kaihoka Farm. Sleeps 16, in various bedrooms and 2 lounges. Good place to stay and be cosy at night while days are getting shorter. Self catering, kitchen available. I have not stayed and walked there, but the Waimea Club have. So, I trust there are enough long walks ;)We ll leave Friday morning, to make to most of it. Even if we can't check in by lunchtime, we can go walking. Also, we ll walk on Sunday before driving home in the late afternoon, early evening. Those having to work on Friday can still drive over after work and join us in the evening. Please indicate what time you can leave on Friday when you register. There is also an option to walk the nearby Puponga/Wharariki Beach track as a crossover on Friday or Sunday. About 10km, 4hrs or much more, depending on beach time. Extensions possible, e.g Greenhills loop. We might get wet feet at some stage, so bring spare shoes or trekking sandals. Low tide at Wharariki is at 2.37pm on Friday, 3.24pm Saturday, and 4.12pm Sunday. Price is $25 pp per night. Or less, depending on numbers. Bring sleeping bags and towels. There is a fully equipped kitchen. 2 lounge areas, a shower and bath. Once you register, you are committed to pay, because we have to pay for the homestead .more info here:https://kaihokafarmstay.co.nz/Latest plan:Friday: Leave by 9am (or after work, for the 2nd group).Drive to Puponga and Wharariki. Cross over (or car shuffle and all start at Puponga) Hilltop walk. Undulating 10km, fab views, 10km, 4 - 5 hrs depending on extras and beach/pup time. Most likely wet feet at the Wharariki end, river crossing before the beach. Low tide at 14.37.Drive to Kaihoka Farm, walk 40min OW to beach, if enough time left.Saturday: Walk on farm tracks up Mt Lunar, explore rock formations (half day).Lunch at farm house, then option to explore the bluffs of the neighbours farm in search of a Hudson Bomber crashed in 1941, (I got their permission to walk there) and/or walk the scenic Kaihoka lakes and/or back to beach for sunset...whatever time allows. Joyce, the farm owner will tell us about all options on Friday night.Sunday: Drive to Collingwood and climb Mt Burnett on a 4WD Track, 641m, about 4.5 hrs return. Great views. Then home (after a stop at the Mussel Inn?) |
