Description

It is 7 years (I think) since the Club last climbed to the top of Mt Campbell from Brooklyn Valley. {Its the one with the mast on the top that we can see from Nelson)

UPDATE 17 July. Contact has being made with the landowners along the proposed route. This trip, we cannot use the farm track used in 2006. However, the adjoing landowner has suggested an alternative route across their farm. This could involve an early short, sharp climb of approx 200 metres up a fenceline or a longer more gradual climb up another fenceline along a ridge. This route will give us a view of the intake for the local mini-hydro power station. From there we will follow the boundary fence to cross the Brooklyn Stream and follow a paper road. This will take us up to a house built on the road reserve. From here we will continue along the road reserve and then follow that to the old repeater station at 1150m. From there we follow the service road to the top at 1330m. The landowners suggested an alternative return route mainly across their land to pass by an old hut called the 'Boys Brigade Hut" which still shows on topo maps (they have done some maintenance on the hut) On the way we will also pass by a hut that used to be known as "Nick's Hut" with lovely views over Motueka. We will then descend a long farm track back to the cars. The last trip report suggested a 6 hour (return) walk, however with the new route, it may take a bit longer. So the plan would be to leave Nelson at 8am to start walking soon after 9am. That will give us 7-8 hours of good daylight, but hopefully around 7 so that we can be back in Nelson by 6 pm at the latest. The walk could be Saturday (looking the better option at present) or Sunday depending on the weather. It is exposed at the top!
