Description

Trip Change:

Meet at Eureka Park 8.30. head up to 3rd house, Windy point and Coppermine Saddle then down to Maitai to get to cars dropped to here at 0800.

Davids suggested variation - for discussion along the way

"A possible variation, if you want a bit more variety, would be to go down to the dam from Junction Saddle via Sclanders Creek and the Maitai Cave.  Penny and I did that going the other way just the other week, but I’m happy to go back down there if people want a more interesting route than the cycleway.  What do you think, Penny?  And Andrea, I recall that you asked me about it in May.  There’s straightforward off-track for about 1¼ hours (Junction Saddle to Sclanders Creek) of about 3½ hours between Junction Saddle and Maitai dam.  Adding say 3 hours from Eureka Park to Junction Saddle, this makes about 7½ hours total, compared to about 7 hours following the Coppermine trail all the way.  All plus breaks. "

When the Dun Mountain Railway was opened in 1862 then the previous access route fell into disuse.  This was called the Bullock Track and it ran around the north and east sides of Wooded Peak.  After 160 years of disuse there is very little trace of the Bullock Track left, but I have found some of those traces.

This trip will start from Brook valley and follow the Dun Mountain trail past Third House and Junction Saddle and then go off-track on the slopes of Wooded Peak to follow the parts of Bullock Track that I have found and attempt to find some more and maybe reach Coppermine Saddle.

There is no guarantee that we will find any more track or reach any destination, but we will definitely find stinging nettle, bush lawyer, fallen trees and rocky bluffs.
