This is a longish trip through a range of landscapes and vegetation types, starting and returning to the Maitai dam (180M). We climb through the open ultramafic area to Dun Saddle (982M) then branch off to the North and up to Dun Mountain (1130M) where we are likely to have lunch. Over Dun Mountain we descend to a saddle 1000M before climbing into beech forest to Little Twin (1143M) . From here we descend, then traverse along a swampy flat with dwarf beech trees, and bog pines to Dew Lakes (920M). The track back to the Dam is through beech forest and open scrublands, passing Rush Pool and the argillite mine site, and finally onto a forestry road. This is a long tramp, we will leave Nelson at 8.00. If you wish to come on this trip, but are NOT a member of the NTC, then please contact me before registering for this trip. |
