(Note: this is an alternative trip to the Mt Riley/Sunday loop planned for today. Sadly, the access road is closed due to damage from the July storm. There is no currently time scheduled for re-opening - hopefully we can go another time soon!) The Champion Mine Circuit takes in the historic Champion Smelter, and Champion and United copper mines. The circuit provides insight to the history of Nelson’s short-lived copper industry that began in the late 1800s, and traverses the fascinating Dun Mountain Mineral Belt. It takes about 5 hrs (plus time to explore mine relics) on undulating tracks, with some rough, unformed sections and a few river/stream crossings - depending on water level, get wet boots, or bring sandals! 560m ascent, runs mostly through native bush, with some good views along the ridge. |
