This is a wet-boot tramp to a seldom-visited NZFS hut near Lewis Pass. PLAN A: Day1: Drive 2.5 hours past Springs Junction. From the Marble Hill car park, ford the Maruia River and follow a 4WD track alongside the Alfred Stream (1.5 hrs). Follow a good benched track to reach Gilchrist Creek and descend into Pell Stream. Visit Blackadder's Hut (pvte.) Head upstream, fording where required and exiting the stream bed onto a plateau to avoid a gorged section. Dropping back into the stream and then crossing 2km of grassy flats up to the hut.(4 bunks + woodstove). Day 2: Return via same route. 5-6 hours one way. PLAN B: If the Maruia is flowing too high: We will book bunks in the new lodge at Lake Daniells, an easy 3 hours jaunt from Marble Hill. Contact Ray by Wednesday night: Email: |
