Explore the Bay, overnighting in Collingwood. Leave Nelson 8am Saturday, walk the easy and pretty Pupu Springs Loop (1 1/2 hr) and the Aorere Goldfields (3 hr loop, plus extra time to explore mining relics and caves) on the way up to Collingwood. There is a nice camp ground right by the estuary. I'd suggest we share cabins, but camping is possible. Options for eating out in town, or have a camping cook up on Saturday night. https://collingwoodholidaypark.co.nz/accommodation-rates/ Sunday, drive up to Puponga, walk the Hilltop Walk from the former lighthouse along cliff tops past Pillar Point, Cape Farewell, via Wharariki Beach (wet feet crossing!) to Greenhills Loop Track, and return along 6km gravel road, or car shuffle (up to 6 hrs, undulating, medium). Great coastal scenery and hopefully some seal pups at Wharariki. If there is spare time, we can explore Fossil point tracks. Drive back when it gets dark. |
