Description |

This trip is guaranteed to be an adventure. Although this territory in the Aniseed Valley is well trod, Malcolm knows all the ins and outs to make an interesting trip: bush, tops with extensive views and historic aspects. The discovery of an outcrop of copper ore in the upper Aniseed Valley by Fred Stratford in 1881 led to the development of an industry that saw a 30-year flurry of activity, both on the ground and in the share market. No fortunes were made; plenty were lost. They have left us places to explore with an associated collection of relics and stories. Our trip will start at the Roding River carpark by the caretaker's house and proceed to the mine sites on a well marked track. From the Champion Mine, we head off-track into a gully and up a spur to Mt Meares and then a hard R onto the spur leading to Mt Malita. Then we follow a well marked track back down to the Roding carpark. Estimate 8 hrs or the circuit. |
