Description

  

Mount Mantell :  At 1606m she stands between the Matakitaki and Maruia river valleys 35 km from Murchison. Access is via Matakitaki Road and Maruia Saddle Road. The track starts 20m up the bank opposite Culvert 17. The route is up the spur through mixed beech/podocarp forest on a unmaintained track (some markers and used mainly by hunters) breaking out onto the tops at 1300m and heading on up to Pt 1472. The non-technical ridge then goes on 2km to the summit with grand views all round - Victoria Range to the W and Nelson Lakes NP to the E.

Leaving Nelson 6AM sharp
2.5 h drive to carpark
1450 m total vertical ascent (descent), 11.8 km return distance, 8/9 h return.
The track follows a steep well marked route in the bush, then a 2.5 km long undulating tussock ridge.
No water along the route, please take plenty with you.
Back in Nelson in the evening, we might have something to eat in Murchison.

It is IMPORTANT that "You contact the Trip Leader before registering" for a trip. Especially if you are new to the club or a non-club member (Visitor). The Leader will need to be confident that you have the experience, fitness and the correct gear to complete the trip successfully. :-)
