Description

NOTE: change of day to Sunday. Saturday will be the reserve day. Grade is medium/fit.
Assemble at Nelson Cathedral steps at 0930 and drive to Glenduan (14km). Low water Nelson is 1351.

From Glenduan, walk along the bouldery beach NE towards Cable Bay. About 1km before Ataata Point, climb up a steep, exposed grassy slope to a low saddle at about 175m. Walk SW along Cable Bay Walkway back to Glenduan. Sentinel Hill is just NE of the saddle, and could be a scenic spot to enjoy a late lunch. Optional side trip to drop down the walkway from the saddle to visit Cable Bay. Optional side trip to climb Drumduan 657m. Do both, it won't be dark until 10pm! ?

Update: the programme coordinator and I walked this route Wednesday afternoon 23 November and found the landscape somewhat altered due to recent storm effects. On the positive side, I found the beach walk a little easier due to gravel from the recent slips being spread by wave action. On the negative side, the first 20m of climb towards the saddle is steeper, and if you don't have a reasonable head for heights you might find it a bit challenging. By sticking to the long grass, the steeper section can be mostly avoided. We both sustained mild/moderate allergic contact dermatitis from the vegetation. If you suffer readily from this type of allergy, you should consider bringing a suitable antihistamine with you, and/or wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Gloves to prevent grass cuts are also worth considering. A narrow slip gully from top to bottom has cleft the slope, meaning the climb will take you about 300m SW of the saddle. If you arrive at the base of the climb and decide it is not for you, you have the option of returning back along the beach. The beach walk is about 4km, 1.5 hours one way plus breaks. A report with photos is posted on the club Facebook page (link is on the right hand side of the club home page).              Reasonably good weather is required for this trip to go ahead.
