We have walked the Canvastown end of the Wakamarina several times as far as Devils Creek Hut. This tramp is an end to end walkthru that will require two cars and 8 -10 people to make the travelling worthwhile. This an old goldminers trail and is rated 'medium' for difficulty. It is a 'well beaten' trail from my reading! The plan: Depart Cathedral Steps at 8am. It's 1.5 hours drive to Butchers Flat at the northern end (85km) & 2 hours to Kiwi Road off Onamalutu Road off Northbank Road at the southern end (130 km). Hopefully these are conservatove driving toimes! It is then 2 hours to Devils Creek Hut for the SOBO group; another 2.5 to 3 hours to Fosters Clearing, including a climb of 800 meters; then 2 hours to the carpark. In total a 6.5 to 7 hour tramp. So for SOBO, walking from 10 am at the latest means finishing by 5 pm (before dark) Then the 2 hour drive back to Nelson- arrive 7pm - hence the Sat plan rather than Sunday. For the NOBO group it is the reverse; Start walking at 10.30 am (at the latest) - 2 hrs and quite a steep steady climb to Fosters Clearing and the Saddle; downhill to Devils Creek Hut so hopefully 2.5 hours and another 2 hours walk out to the carpark at Butchers Flat. Out by 5.30 at the latest.Back to Nelson by 7pm. Because of the short daylight hours and the cool weather; the plan is not to dilly-dally too much. Fosters Hut is near Fosters Clearing and the saddle- time for a quick visit only.
