Day One: Travel 2.5 hrs to Springs Junction. From Rahu Saddle, tramp 3.5 hrs (7.2km) to stay in or camp by, Lake Stream Hut (2 bunks). DOC website says: 'This is easy alpine ambience at its best. This route starts from a carpark 3 km upstream from Tobins Bridge on SH7. The route follows Lake Stream, crossing it several times.' Day Two: From Lake Stream Hut, return to car. Day climb of Mt Haast (1587m) 6 hrs return (5km). Drive back to Nelson. DOC website says: 'From a carpark beside the Upper Inangahua Bridge, there is a very steep two hour climb to the bushline on a well-formed route. It is another hour along the right-hand ridge to the pyramid-shaped peak of Mt Haast which provides spectacular views of nearby glacial valleys and the Main Divide.' |
