Drive to Murchison and on up the Matakitaki Road to Maruia Saddle (580m). Proceed to walk on a marked route through the beech forest up to the bushline (track not maintained by DOC for some years). The track traverses across tussock tops and takes us to the summit of Mt Mantell (1606m). Splendid views all round. We will camp on the ridge, so tents to be carried. Then back from whence we came with a coffee stop in Murch. Cancelled due to poor weather. |
