Description

New year tramp 2022/23 Peel-Lockett Range Cross over.

Trip leaders: Debbie Hogan Peel - Locket range direction & Graeme Ferrier - Locket - Peel ranage direction.

Thursday 29 December – 3 Jan : Leave cars at Trilobite hut / Sylvester hut car parks

Peel – Locket Range direction

Day 1: From Trilobite hut a gentle walk up the Cobb valley for morning tea at Chaffey Hut. Soon after the hut we turn off the track and head up a ridge towards Mount Prospect. Once above the bush line, we will traverse around to our first camp site at Camp Lake.

Day 2: Climb up from our campsite to above the bush line and sidle around the ridge to below Mt Cobb. For those feeling inclined, a climb up Mt Cobb (without full packs) will give great views. (The route up is a bit exposed at times.) We continue along the ridge to take in Mt Gibbs, return to the lake and drop down to Round lake, where we then pick up the path from Round lake to the big tree camp site above Lake Cobb.

Day 3: Drop down to Fenella hut for lunch and a swim in the tarns before slowly plodding up the Waingaro Peak track. We will camp at the little valley at the top of the climb. For those with lots of energy, we can walk to Kakapo Peak and back without full packs. (3 -4 hr return). Celebrate the new Year evening in the mountains with the group doing the trip in the other direction.

Day 4: We start down the Lockett range, past Mt Benson to camp at Ruby lake or Diamond Lake.

Day 5: Explore the area, climb whatever peaks call to us (Iron Hill) and camp at Lake Lockett.

Day 6: Back to the cars via the Diamond lake stream path.

Locket -Peel Range direction

Day 1: From Sylvester hut car park up Diamond lake stream path to camp at Lake Lockett.

Day 2: Climb up Iron Hill and along the ridge, dropping down again to camp at Ruby lake.

Day 3: From Ruby lake climb up and around Mt Benson to the campsite in the valley below Waingaro Peak to join the group doing the trip in the other direction. For those with lots of energy, we can walk to Kakapo Peak and back without full packs. (3 -4 hr return). Celebrate the new Year evening in the mountains with the group doing the trip in the other direction.

Day 4: Drop down the Waingaro Peak track to Fenella hut for morning tea and a swim in the tarn. Climb Xenicus Peak before camping at either Lake Cobb or Round lake.

Day 5: Climb up past Round lake and onto the ridge. Climb Mt Cobb if you don’t mind the exposure, for those great views. Otherwise a gentle walk around the ridge to find the last camp site at Camp lake.

Day 6: Back to the cars via Chaffey Hut with a final swim in the Cobb river.

Note: This trip is all off route, so you need to be comfortable walking on small/no paths. We will be camping at lakes every night, so bring your own/share a tent. The distances we cover every day aren't very far, which will give us time to expore/climb peaks in the area.  Total distance is 54km over 6 days (5 nights). Side trips to Mt Gibbs and Kakapoe Peak have been included in this distance. This trip won't be as hard as the 21-22 New Year tramp of Dragon's teeth (gums) but will still need a good level of fitness and tramping experience.

Entry / Exit point at Fenella Hut for those only wanting/able to do half the trip (31 Dec).

Email Debbie for more information and a map of the route.
