Super couple of days exploring this area on a joint venture with our friends in the MTC club, thanks Guys.
Access to this area is the Leatham road off SH63. There is one ford over Enchanted Stream to cross which does need a 4WD about 3K from track start, so you could do the extra Kms and go in 2WD, road fine to that point. Easy parking just off road, wouldn't park in quarry myself due to potential rockfall.
The track climbs steadily and then undulates along the ridge for about 700m, it is rocky in places, lovely open tops with views down into Boulder stream and the Peaks of Pinnacle (2120m)and Bounds (2044m). It is easy to follow and drops down into Station Creek and climbs up to a saddle. It is at this point easy access onto the ridge towards Mt Impy. We didn’t explore on this occasion as time was not favourable, though weather was splendid.
From the saddle it is a deceptive couple of hours down to Hidden Hut, initially through scrub and then beech forest. It is listed as a four bunk hut but it’s actually 5. The hut book went back to 1986 so little used, lots of flat camping around. On the return we dropped down into Boulder stream. The easy drop off is to follow the fence line spur between points 1110 and 1149. Here it is about 1.5KM walk from Boulder Forks hut where you can check out the historic hut there which bears the faint scribble of Sir E Hillary. Pleasant jaunt then along Boulder Stream and back to the cars. All our bods held up with no great dramas, Angus taking it easy cruising on dads back. We did work out we could probably cobble up one good body between all our various body parts! Another successful completed venture with great company and chats and lovely stretch of the leggies.
