p4240037 Rivers are one of the biggest hazards for users of the backcountry. Many streams and rivers aren't bridged and knowing WHEN, WHERE and HOW to cross are important skills for any person who travels in the backcountry of New Zealand. A stream you easily crossed a few hours ago can quickly turn into a dangerous obstacle after rain or snow melt. The following links can assist you to make better river crossing decisions but I would recommend getting out on one of the club's River Safety training days to gain practical experience.

  • Get to know the features of a river and understand how these features could assist  OR endanger you whilst crossing a river. Eddies, recirculating waves, buffer waves, standing waves, rapids, waterfalls, obstacles, strainers, weirs, unstable/undercut banks and the nature of river bottoms are all terms that you need to get a handle on. • Find out WHERE TO CROSS and why its important to keep in mind where you may end up if you are swept down a river. Also check out the TECHNIQUES used when crossing a river/stream - Click here for more info
