6 women trampers left Nelson at 8 am for the longish drive to Pelorus Sound and the start of the Mt Cawte Track at Moetapu Bay. It was close to 10am when we set off in warm sunny conditions.
We reached the top (474M) at 11.30 and because of the views and big picnic table decided it was time for lunch despite having had a morning tea break a short time earlier.
Over lunch we shared stories and enjoyed the warm conditions.
We had the option to return the way we came, or go over the top and down to the end of Moetapu Rd which then required a walk back to the cars via the road. We chose the latter.
Mt Cawte track was built by Outward Bound Students in the early 2000's for recreation and pest control, there did not appear to be any pest control except along the road.
The track was in good condition up to the high point, but the lesser used track beyond this was a bit overgrown and not well marked. Most of the track is through regeneration forest, though there were some big beech trees on the flat top.
We were down to the road by 1 and back at the cars at 2pm.
An easy day walk made pleasurable by the amiable company of all participants.
