ntc logobanner 2026 rev

On Saturday 8 November, eight keen hut lovers met at 8 am at Mrs Smith cafe in Riwaka to head up to Sylvester hut in the Cobb Valley, which our club was able to register for, to do the annual hut cleaning. After the longish drive, we all started walking up to the hut, equipped with all sorts of handy things like mops, buckets, lots of rags, cleaning products, slasher, screwdrivers, yummy sweets (thanks Leah and Heidi) and, most of all, plenty of enthusiasm.

After lunch we got stuck in. As many hands make light work, after two hours the bulk of the tasks were done and we could switch to the recreational activities like cups of tea, exploring the surroundings and (yes!) swims in Lake Sylvester (the brave ones!). The next day we all headed up to Iron Hill, enjoying the glorious weather and beautiful scenery. On the way down more swims were had by the same brave people in Iron Lake and we were back at the hut for lunch. After that we did the final cleaning duties, completed the admin and left the hut spick and span and very pleased with our efforts. A fun and rewarding weekend!
