On a warm morning with plenty of bird song about, we 6 set off on Saturday morning leaving the Mt Robert carpark at 10am, up Pinchgut track to the Robert ridge and on to Angelus Hut, our destination and out via the Cascade route on Sunday, or a possible overnight at Coldwater hut.
It took us 6 hours to reach the hut with breaks, with the cloud coming and going, and eventually clearing to wonderful views through to the Raglan range and beyond.
Along the way Steve, one of our new participant's had a mishap and tripped over and knocked his forehead , a small gash and bruising. Luckily, a fellow hiker offered to take Steve back to the car park so he could get his head looked at by A and E. (He is fine! Astrid met him on Tuesday, admiring his quick recovery despite his bruised face!)
So now we were 5..we continued on to a full hut and a gorgeous alpen glow over the lake to Mt Angelus.
We set off at 830 am on Sunday on a clear day and made our way down the Cascade saddle route with no mishaps,
lots of waterfalls and a hoar frost on the valley floor, lunch in the sun on the river flats arriving at Coldwater Hut by 230...we had a pit stop and decided to push onto the road end, arriving at 530 pm.. John continued on to get the vehicle, a steady 25 minute walk to the carpark, homeward bound by 6pm.
Sunny lunch break in TraversVly
We did take photos of the Doc signs guiding trampers up the cascade route. Timings were totally incorrect where they were placed of how long one should allow for the climb ahead. We will follow up with Doc.
It's easier than sunset saddle btw
