Three of us set off from Beebys carpark up the steady climb through beech and an amazing number of young horoeka and good birdsong. Needless to say, we got too warm so off came the layers. The track was noticeably more travelled once the Unhinged mtb track was met. I have never seen anyone on two wheels on this track but some daring folk must do it.

We broke out of the bush on the main ridge and were greeted with almost limitless views of the Wairau, St Arnaud Range and through to the Inland Kaikōura’s. Further up along the 4wd track the views became 360 0 with the Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Lower North Island mountain ranges visible over the Cook Straight down the Wairau. Love the ridge travel.

We made for Beebys Hut, 2¾ hours from the carpark. Unlike the last time when we huddled in the hut trying to warm up whilst snow was banked up outside, this time we had the door open it was so warm. We could still smell the smoke in the hut from the night before – apparently the hut is notorious for a poorly performing fire – but at least is has a fire unlike Red Hills Hut nearby.

With lunch completed and a breeze pushing us along we made for Beebys Knob and after more photos descended the way we had come. 2½ hrs down to the carpark, toadstools the whole way. Hopefully my two cycling (non-member) buddies will come again if I didn’t walk their legs off!
