To replace the Mt Starvaell Tramp, I am planning to investigate an "old' track/route to Saddle Hill from the top of Maungatapu Saddle. It has not b een maintained after major windfall damage some 10+ years ago. Originally i t was well marked with its own picnic table and track sign! After many year s however, the markers may be hard to find. We will take coloured tape to m ark our route. It will take about two hours to walk up the old road to the saddle. We would then follow the ridgeline (as well as we can) throug h beech forest across peak 1168 to Saddle Hill at 1215 m. There is a return track called the 'Zig Zag' that we may try to find for a possibly shorter return leg. Plan to leave Nelson at 8 am for 8.30 start at Maitai Dam. Retu rn to the cars no later than 5 pm when the gates close!
