DESCRIPTION:Kaituna Track and Mount Stephens\nThis is Version 2 of the weekend we had l
 ast September, when we had to alter the programme, due to rain and storm.\n
 \nWe leave Nelson Friday after work (or some cars might leave around luncht
 ime?), stay 2 nights at Golden Bay Holiday Park in Parapara, right on the b
 each (north of Onekaka, near Mussle Inn). There are various sizes of cabins

 ould have a shared potluck dinner or eat in Takaka on the way up.\n\nSaturd
 ay:\nKaituna Track Crossover, fit, 8-9 hrs, 21km, marked route, never done

  continues right through to Westhaven Inlet on the West Coast (8-9 hours). 
 The route climbs over two ridges before reaching Knuckle Hill.\nBeyond the 
 Kaituna Forks, the track changes to a 'route' and is suitable only for expe
 rienced and fit trampers. At the forks there is a river crossing which is i
 mpassable in flood.\nThere are northern rātā, pukatea and rimu, nīkau palms
 , heketara, wineberry, kāmahi, and māhoe, many species of fern, orchid, fun
 gi and perching plants, plus a wide range of birds: kererū, tūī, fantail, t
 omtit, robin, rifleman, silvereye and bellbird."\nIf the river crossing is 
 impossible, but the skies are clear, we'll climb Parapara Peak (1240m) inst
 ead, (8-9 hrs, fit),\nor (if too cloudy) we'll walk Cape Farewell/Wharariki
  Beach/Puponga Hilltop/Kaihoka lakes loop, (medium) depending on weather.\n
 Bad weather alternatives: Aorere Goldfields loop, Kaituna walk, Pupu Spring
 s.\nEither way, I'd suggest dinner at the Mussel Inn afterwards!\n\nSunday:
 \nMt Stephens, (1300m), 7hrs, route, 7km one way, return the same way, medi
 um +/fit,\nThe route up on to Mt Stevens, 1300 m, the highest point in the 
 Wakamarama Range provides wonderful views of the Aorere Valley, south to Go
 uland Downs and the West Coast. \nIt's 28km from Collingwood\nDrive home Su
 nday evening. (Or stay another night if you dont have to work on Monday)\n
