Arthur's Pass has its 3 pass trip, and Southland has its 5 pass trip; Ne lson Lakes lends itself perfectly to a 7 pass trip. Link the Travers, Sabin e and D'Urville valleys (with small incursions into the Waiau and Matakitak i ) by crossing Travers Saddle, Waiau, Thompson and D'Urville Passes, David Saddle, and Moss and Gunsight Passes. 7 days tramping of 5 to 10 hour days . Allow up to 2 extra days for rest or weather. Tents required for 2 nights ; maybe more if huts are busy. Ice axes and crampons are not required. Agil ity on rough ground is required. Start and/or finish the trip with the Roto iti water taxi ($30 each way). Celebrate NTC's 85th birthday with a notable trip in our backyard.
Flexible start date to time fine weather for the first 5 crossings (4 days). There are plenty of alternative routes if inclement conditions are encountered. If snow is persisting on the pass es the trip will be postponed.
