SUMMARY:Kahurangi Lighthouse | Beach Walk
URL;VALUE=URI:https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1648/kahurangi-lighthouse-bea
 ch-walk?tmpl=component
DESCRIPTION:Kahurangi Point Lighthouse | 3 Days in the wildWalk 3-4 hours along rugged
shoreline. Stay overnight at Kahurangi Keepers' House. Visit lighthouse on
Kahurangi Point. \nThis is a wild and often windswept coastline beside the
turbulent Tasman Sea. The weather, sea and tide conditions can make travel
challenging.\nOn Saturday, we drive for 3-4 hours to Anaweka in Golden Bay.
\nTwo rivers must be crossed at or close to low water. Anaweka River must b
e crossed at the beach. At Big River it is occasionally possible to cross a
t the river mouth if it's shallow enough and sea conditions allow. If not,
head up the estuary and wade across where its seems the shallowest. After B
ig River, the beach gives way to huge inter-tidal rock platforms near Kahur
angi Point. Just before the point is Kahurangi Keepers' House. This house w
as made originally from the nearby houses of the former lighthouse keepers
and altered to its present shape in 2003. Sometimes the hot shower works. T
here's ample camping outside this 25-bunk home.\nA short walk further on ar
ound the coast takes you to the lighthouse, built in 1903. The house is not
visible from the beach so look for the sign and orange marker. If you sigh
t the lighthouse you have gone too far.\nSunday is for either relaxing, vis
iting the giant dunes, the lighthouse, or exploring the coast further south
. It's possible to rise at dawn, and return a day earlier.\nFirst thing on
Monday, we return the same way, then return to Nelson.\nFor DOC Info : http
