In Europe, cl imbing on wire ropes and ladders over, around and up rock faces is very pop ular. It is called Via Ferrata.(by wire??)
Takaka Hill is now home to NZ's second Via Ferrata (the first is a private one near Wanaka) Stage 1 o pened late last year and is free to access.... but you need to hire safety gear. ($8/person from Ngarua Caves)
Stage 2 is under construction and will be a longer, more thrilling experience. But Sta ge 1 is a good test of your confidence for climbing around cliff faces.
There is a small "test climb" for people to check their confidence. If i t's not for you, the Walkway offers an alternative.
