SUMMARY:Maitai Pipeline
URL;VALUE=URI:https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1484/maitai-pipeline?tmpl=com
ponent
DESCRIPTION:
Starting from the Maitai dam, a one way walk along the pipe maintenance
track to the point where the pipeline crosses the river near the Maitai mot
or camp. Cars will be retrieved from the dam at the end of the walk. 7km an
d approx 250m climb.

Possible to extend walk up to Tantragee Saddle a
nd back to the cars, if group decide.

Update: Fri 10.01.25

We w
ill meet at the Cathedral steps at 8.30am. The weather should be mild, but
no rain.

We will start the walk looking at the Maitai dam infrastruct
ure before walking along the pipeline route as part of the Coppermine trail
to the Smith Ford bridge, where the trail meets the Maitai river road. A c
limb of 40m up the other side of the river valley will get us back onto the
pipeline route. We stay high above the river valley as the pipeline falls
ever so gently. There are lovely views from there. Above the Maitai Whara I
ti cabins we drop down into the valley again, cross the Maitai river above
the pipeline and back up the pipeline on the other side of the valley to th
e water treatment sludge ponds. There we will investigate the final section
of the pipeline as it tunnels through the hillside under the Tantragee sad
dle to the treatment works. Bring a torch, just in case.

Back to the
cars parked at the pipeline crossing just above the motor camp.
<p
