SUMMARY:Craig Peak, Westland - Cancelled

et Craig Peak trip" width="240" height="160" />

Update - Cancell
ed

Ducks are very much askew - weather system bearing down. Only two
peopled showed interest. For now it's cancelled, but it will not be forgot
ten.

Description

This trip definately will require all the du
cks to be aligned; good snow cover and nice frosty conditions.

Snow s
kills required.

Camping in the snow and walking in the dark will be f
eatures of this trip.

Day 1

Drive down to Fo
x Glacier township and stay at NZAC Porter Lodge. Lots of coffee stops on t
he way.

Day 2

Drive to the start of the track just south of F
ox Glacier, then start walking up the steep track. We want to have enough t
ime to attain the tarns and setup camp. We will then walk back towards Mt F
ox for dinner and the sunset. Once the sun has set and dinner completed, we
will then proceed back to the campsite

The alternative is to have di
nner and walk back to the viewpoint. This is a trip where things might be a
little fluid, so be prepared to be flexible.

[I will work out the ti
mings in more detail in due course.]

Day 3

Alpine start and m
ake our way along the ridge towards Craig Peak. I did this trip in 2010, fr
om memory (not always reliable!) the going is straight forward. After attai
ning the summit we will return via the same route. We will take our lunch [
last time we didn't - thinking it would be a short trip! We arrived back at
 the campsite at 15:30].

An early start will give us some flexibility
. Ideally we will get back at the campsite, decamp and head back down. Last
time it was a 13.5 hr day, but it is fun walking downhill in the bush, in
the dark. Yes? Alternatively, we will stay another night at the campsite an
d have an early start the next day.

Day 4

Return home, either
starting at the campsite on the tops, or from Porter Lodge. Again, lots of
 coffee stops enroute.
<a href="https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/
