SUMMARY:Historic Booths Cottage - easy day walk
URL;VALUE=URI:https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1406/historic-booths-cottage-
 easy-day-walk?tmpl=component
DESCRIPTION:Glenhope Scenic Reserve, 16km from St Arnaud via Howard valley.\nHistoric B
ooth's Cottage was built back in 1933 during the not-so-Great Depression by
Sid Booth and Ray Clarke. This was the family home of Sid and Eva Booth an
d their son Teddy for over 10 years. The old-timer is situated in a small f
orest clearing, above Louis Creek on an old miners’ track. Expect other use
rs in the area ... 4WD vehicles, quad bikes, motor bikes and mountain biker
s.\nInitially, it takes 30 mins on a clay 4WD track to Louis Creek fossicki
ng area. (In 2024 this pine forest had been cleared, and new forestry roads
added.) Then, a DOC sign indicates the start of public conservation land,
as you enter the native forest. Soon a private dwelling is passed, and even
tually the track becomes eroded at the confluence of two streams. Care is n
eeded here to cross, reaching a the Jewellers Shop on the far bank. This in
cludes the remains of a hut, along with mining tailings. It's a steady clim
b then sidle around on a tramping track up to the restored cottage.\nNext,
we push on up a broad ridge of open beech. The NZFS had marked the track wi
th permolat, and will take about half an hour to reach the 4WD road that dr
ops into Lake Rotoroa. By 2024, mountain bikers have made this trail obviou
 s. Hard work done, we follow the Porika Road past a gold miner’s memorial c
airn, and more locked cabins, back down to the car. An easy circuit.\n\n -
Time: 1.5 hrs to Booths Historic Hut.\n - Total Time: 5 hours for the loop.
