Saturday
Meet at 7.30 drive 2 hrs to Rolling Junction, walk to Kiw i Saddle Hut, 6 bunks, ca 7 hrs.
The first half is along the Wangapek a Track, then off a side track along Kiwi Stream through bush to the shelte red little hut. 1 ticket or Hut Pass. A good track the whole way. If we hav e 2 cars, we'll have a short shuffle of 3km at Rolling Jctn.
Sunday
Summit Mt Patriarch and along the panorama ridge to John Reid Hut, 6 b unks, 1 ticket or Pass. Full day tramp.
Up from the hut for about 2 1 /2 hrs through bush. Drop packs at the bushline and scramble up Mt Patrirch , then on to John Reid along a ridge route. The ridge is stunning on a clea r day (that's why I ll only go if the forecast is good for Sunday! I have w alked the ridge once in fog, without views) with great views of the Mt Owen massif. People could choose to skip the summit climb up Patriarch, saves 1 1/2hrs. However, the group plan is to summit. The route is unmarked, but f airly obvious to follow. At the end of the day, drop down 20min to John Rei d Hut, in a stunning location.
Monday
Very steep down Chummies Track through beautiful bush (can be slippery!), cross the Wangapeka river (wet feet!), ca 4hrs, then drive home.
I will only do this if forecas t for Sunday looks good, as i have already walked it once in the fog!
