From carpark at Aniseed Valley road end, follow 4wd track to Champion Sm elter site, accepting wet feet with several crossings of the Roding River. After a stop to look around and read signs outlining history of the mining work, follow the old tramline route to the mine site beside Champion Creek. From here we enjoy several hours of trackless country as we navigate our w ay over the fascinating dunite landscape. We climb a spur to Mt Meares and then follow the well defined ridge westward to Mt Malita, 959m. Beyond the Champion mine site there will be half an hour of "scrub bashing" before we gain the open mineral belt. Unfortunately wilding pines invade the mineral belt, so if participants have some spare time and energy, some of these pes ts could be dealt to as we go along. Carry a pruning saw if you are keen to do this. From Malita we descend to the carpark via forestry tracks. The tr ip will take about 8 hours and requires reasonable weather.
