Access to Kill Devil Track (aka Waingaro Forks Track) is off Uruwh enua Road in Takaka East, so it requires a trip "over the hill"- probably j ust over an hour from Richmond.
The track itself is an old gold minin g trail with a steep climb of approx 700 m on a zig zag track.( I presume t his is where the Kill Devil name came from ?)
On the map it is about one-third of the distance but the switchbacks will add extra distance.(Appr ox 2 - 2.5hours?) Tin Hut Shelter will provide a break after the clim b. The track then largely follows a ridgeline above the Waingaro River --&n bsp; in, out and over various rock formations with a further climb of 100m before descending 150 m towards Riordans Hut. My estimate is a further 7km (2hrs) to Riordans Hut. Say 4-4.5 hours but less on the return down the hil l? (It is a total of 26 km Return/8 hrs?)
The vegetation is mai nly kanuka and stunted scrub on the ridgeline, but quite impressive views d own into the Wainagro River. It is quite exposed to the sun and wind.
