SUMMARY:Saddle Hill aka The Doubles
URL;VALUE=URI:https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1091/saddle-hill-aka-the-doub
 les?tmpl=component
DESCRIPTION:In the past this was a very popular local walk, but forestry operations hav
e disrupted the access. NTC has been exploring the route to identify any pr
oblems. It is quite accessible and while we did have some problems locating
the Zig Zag track, we did get to the top! [We added tape to help}.\nThis w
ill be the first attempt as a club trip. It is not technical but it is stee
p in places so a good level of fitness wil help. Saddle Hillis 1217 m and t
he south "Double" is 1168 m with a 2.2 km "walk" in between.\nThe plan:- Pa
rk near the Caretakers House at the Maitai Dam. It is then an easy walk (15
mins) to Teal Saddle (Alt. 350m).\nFrom Teal Saddle follow the firebreak a
long the Water Reserve to the start of the DOC track (600m) [BDL 3 on the T
 opo Map]                                                            This is
the steepest part of the climb but quite short.  Afer a short break, follo
w the marked DOC track through some nice native bush and rock outcrops to t
he start of the Zig Zag climb (at 750 m). Climb from here to the first 'Dou
ble'.(1168m). Follow the DOC markers to Saddle Hill.\nWe will be walking in
bush most of the way, but there are excellent views over Nelson and Tasman
Bay from Saddle Hill itself (weather permitting)\nTramp could be Sat or Su
n depending on the weather.\n This event was imported from: https://live.ne
