URL;VALUE=URI:https://live.nelsontrampingclub.org.nz/events/1039/1000acres-plateau-and-ha
 ystack?tmpl=component
DESCRIPTION:Note trip has been rescheduled to depart a day later based on forecast. Fri
day night start now.\nBest to start on Thursday evening after work, around
5pm from Richmond, drive to Matiri Road end (1 3/4 hrs) and walk into Lake
Matiri Hut (standard, 8 bunks), 1- 1 1/2 hrs.\nFriday climb up to Larrikin
Creek Hut, 6 hrs, partly very steep! Explore the plateau for the rest of th
e day, or climb Mt Misery if time allows.\n(For people who can't leave on T
hursday night, they could leave early on Friday and meet us at Larrikin Hut
)\nStay 2 nights at Larrikin Hut. On Saturday, we'll explore the plateau an
d haystack. I have been to the hut, but not to the Haystack etc (due to bad
weather). I'm sure we'll manage to work it out togther! I'm aiming to comb
ine the Needle and the Haystack as a Saturday day tramp. If people rather j
ust want to spend time to explore the plateau instead, they are welcome to
do so.\nWalk back out and drive home on Sunday.\nDoC info:\n"The hut is a g
ood base for exploring the striking landscape features of the Devils Dining
Table (or the Hundred Acre Plateau as it is also known) and the mudstone p
eaks of The Needle and The Haystack. To reach the Hundred Acre Plateau clim
b the bushy gully to the north of the hut to a tussock basin with tarns. Si
dle west out of the basin onto the plateau. On the western rim is a bump ca
lled Mt Misery. Its a good vantage point to survey the vast Mokihinui water
shed to the west. The Needle can be climbed either from the plateau or by c
ontinuing to the ridge above the tarns. Spectacular views of the Matiri pla
teau, Mokihinui watershed and the broken limestone Matiri Range are the rew
ard. For the agile a ridge traverse is possible from The Needle to The Hays
tack although there are some scrambly notches on the narrow ridge and shoul
d only be attempted with good visibility."\nI am intending to combine both
trips, the Needle and the Hackstack into a long day loop,  from Larrikin Hu
t, on Saturday.\nWe'll need to carry some tents/mats, as Larrikin has only
4 bunks.\nIn accordance with the club's new Covid guidelines under red ligh
t, drivers please indicate if you want to allow double vaxxed passengers on
ly in your cars.\nSee link for a good report and pix:\nhttps://tinytramper.
