DESCRIPTION:<p>Note trip has been rescheduled to depart a day later based on forecast.
Friday night start now.</p><p>Best to start on Thursday evening after work,
around 5pm from Richmond, drive to Matiri Road end (1 3/4 hrs) and walk in
to Lake Matiri Hut (standard, 8 bunks), 1- 1 1/2 hrs.</p><p>Friday climb up
to Larrikin Creek Hut, 6 hrs, partly very steep! Explore the plateau for t
he rest of the day, or climb Mt Misery if time allows.</p><p>(For people wh
o can't leave on Thursday night, they could leave early on Friday and meet
us at Larrikin Hut)</p><p>Stay 2 nights at Larrikin Hut. On Saturday, we'll
explore the plateau and haystack. I have been to the hut, but not to the H
aystack etc (due to bad weather). I'm sure we'll manage to work it out togt
her! I'm aiming to combine the Needle and the Haystack as a Saturday day tr
amp. If people rather just want to spend time to explore the plateau instea
d, they are welcome to do so.</p><p>Walk back out and drive home on Sunday.
</p><p>DoC info:</p><p>"The hut is a good base for exploring the striking l
andscape features of the Devils Dining Table (or the Hundred Acre Plateau a
s it is also known) and the mudstone peaks of The Needle and The Haystack.
To reach the Hundred Acre Plateau climb the bushy gully to the north of the
hut to a tussock basin with tarns. Sidle west out of the basin onto the pl
ateau. On the western rim is a bump called Mt Misery. Its a good vantage po
int to survey the vast Mokihinui&nbsp;watershed to the west. The Needle can
be climbed either from the plateau or by continuing to the ridge above the
tarns. Spectacular views of the Matiri plateau, Mokihinui watershed and th
e broken limestone Matiri Range are the reward. For the agile a ridge trave
rse is possible from The Needle to The Haystack although there are some scr
ambly notches on the narrow ridge and should only be attempted with good vi
sibility."</p><p>I am intending to combine both trips, the Needle and the H
ackstack into a long day loop,&nbsp; from Larrikin Hut, on Saturday.</p><p>
We'll need to carry some tents/mats, as Larrikin has only 4 bunks.</p><p>In
accordance with the club's new Covid guidelines under red light, drivers p
lease indicate if you want to allow double vaxxed passengers only in your c
 ars.</p><p>See link for a good report and pix:</p><p><a href="https://tinyt
