 ackay in 1856: an exercise in vicarious tramping</strong>.</em><br>James Ma
 ckay Jr, then in his 20's, explored the mountainous hinterland of&nbsp;Gold
 en Bay (then known as "Massacre Bay") on three expeditions in 1856 and&nbsp
 ;1858. During these trips, Mackay named such features as Mount Olympus, the
  Clark River, and the Diamond Lakes. This talk will focus on the first trip
 , to the headwaters of the Aorere River. It will be based on a close analys
 is of Mackay's reports in relation to today's topographic knowledge, togeth
 er with computer mapping and display tools. There will be a briefer account
