It is 7 years (I think) since the Club last climbed to the top of Mt Cam pbell from Brooklyn Valley. {Its the one with the mast on the top that we c an see from Nelson)
UPDATE 17 July. Contact h as being made with the landowners along the proposed route. This trip, we c annot use the farm track used in 2006. However, the adjoing landowner has s uggested an alternative route across their farm. This could involve an earl y short, sharp climb of approx 200 metres up a fenceline or a longer more g radual climb up another fenceline along a ridge. This route will give us a view of the intake for the local mini-hydro power station. From there we wi ll follow the boundary fence to cross the Brooklyn Stream and follow a pape r road. This will take us up to a house built on the road reserve. From her e we will continue along the road reserve and then follow that to the old r epeater station at 1150m. From there we follow the service road to the top at 1330m. The landowners suggested an alternative return route mainly acros s their land to pass by an old hut called the 'Boys Brigade Hut" which stil l shows on topo maps (they have done some maintenance on the hut) On the wa y we will also pass by a hut that used to be known as "Nick's Hut" with lov ely views over Motueka. We will then descend a long farm track back to the cars. The last trip report suggested a 6 hour (return) walk, however with t he new route, it may take a bit longer. So the plan would be to leave Nelso n at 8am to start walking soon after 9am. That will give us 7-8 hours of go od daylight, but hopefully around 7 so that we can be back in Nelson by 6 p m at the latest. The walk could be Saturday (looking the better option at p resent) or Sunday depending on the weather. It is exposed at the top!
