Description

Please note: This trip will happen in AUGUST, starting on 26th, but please contact me now, as I will be leaving NZ in early May, with limited access to the internet.

I have worked out a detailed 12 day itineraray, starting from Redbank

The Larapinta trail is a 12day, 223km track in the Red Centre, finishing at Alice Springs (if walked West to East, which I will do).

It runs along the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges. There are gorges and canyons to explore, views from over 1000m altitude, swimming holes and lots of Central Australia's geology, ecology and history.

It is not hard to get to or negotiate, therefore can be walked  independently.

You'll need to carry food for 3-5 days (till next food drop), daily water 4-6l (water at campsites), a warm sleeping bag (possible night frosts) and your usual overnight camping gear.

The sections take between 5 and 11 hrs, most of them being between 8-10 hrs.

As far as i can tell from lots of read ing, the track is reasonably cheap, if self guided: now, since July only, AUS$125 track fee, camping AUS $ 5-20 pp per night, food drop $ 60 per drop per group, track transport $ 100-300 pp, depending on numbers. All rough estimates, to the best of my knowledge. Food and gas can be brought in Alice the day before trekking.

We can arrange (or do ourselves, via rental car for a day) 3 food drops along the trail, so that we only have to carry food for max 5 days. There are also 2 cafes along the trek.

The whole walk is devided into 12 sections (with 35 camp sites). If some want to walk faster or slower, that's fine by me, as long as we all start together - to share transport costs. We'll walk from west to east (that's contrary to most official track descriptions, but it has been recommended to me, and it means not being blinded by afternoon sun.) This way, we simply finish in Alice, which means we dont have to pre-order any track transport, as we wont need a pick up where we end)

I have chosen this period as it seems to be a good time considering a mix of factors: temperature (up to 25 degrees celsius during the day, 0-5 at night, but frosts still possible!), star gazing, bird watching chances, fewer crowds (it's busy in June/July), wildflower resurgence and hopefully just before the blow flies season.

I'll also join a 3day Uluru Tour, to explore of in the area: Uluru, Kata Tjuta (Olgas), and Kings Canyon.
