Description | ||
PELL STREAM HUT A relatively straight-forward 5-hour tramp to seldom-visited Pell Stream Hut, which is hidden up a side valley on the true left of the Alfred River (near Lake Daniell.) After a 3-hour drive south, past Springs Junction, we will park at the Marble Hill campsite, prior to Lewis Pass. Donning our boots, we'll ford the Maruia River onto a 4WD road all the way to Blackadder's Hut (private), which dates back 40+ years to a gold mining operation = 5km + 120m climb. From here the old, unmaintained track criss-crosses Pell Stream, bypassing two gorge sections by climbing onto terraces, then on up to the open flats and hut = 8km + 200m height gain. A wet-boot tramp. Some folks might desire to carry a tent. Being an old 4-bunk NZFS culling hut, it's rated 'basic' and therefore is free of charge - like a bat flattery. We return the same way. Any particularly safe drivers can apply to provide extra transport! Map Series: BT23 | ||
