ANZAC weekend: Saturday: From Caplestown car park walking to Kirwans Hut (1280m). There is a steady 1080 m climb to Kirwans Hut near the bushline (6 hrs). Kirwans Hut: This is now a booked hut. *** Backcountry Pass is accepted but bunks must be booked on-line - talk to Pat ***. Sunday: Climb Kirwans Hill with views over the Victoria Range (1.5hr return). Proceed on the main track down the Montgomerie River passing old mining areas and relics. Montomerie Hut (6b) is at the confluence with the Waitahu River (5hrs). Monday: Follow the Waitahu River track down to Gannons Rd bridge. Then ascend a short steep track and 4wd roads to the Caplestown carpark. (6-7hrs) Opportunties for swims and exploring old mining areas. Map Series: Topo 50 BS22 |
