Access is via Upper Moutere, Dovedale and Thorpe and cross the bridge over the Motueka R. just north of Woodstock, then follow the gravel road on the true left of the Baton River for about 10 km to the Ellis River turn-off. Ford the Baton here. A high clearance 4WD is required. The road is a track and can be driven as far as the suspension bridge and park bench/picnic table at the Haines Stream confluence. Park vehicles here and cross the swing bridge to follow the well signed track on the true left of the Baton.
Track initially easy going on good track, with lovely views of the river, but gradually becoming more demanding. The area is extremely attractive and appealing.
Our likely turn around will be at the junction to Loveridge Spur track.
This will be a “wet-boot” trip as there are several crossings of the Baton needed.
Please note, this trip is very weather dependant, due to the number of river crossings and the need to ford the river in vehicles.
