The Mt Watson Route at the southern end of the Paparoa Range makes for a n adventurous two-day ramble. Croesus Knob grants superb views over the Wes t Coast.
Day 1: Leave cars at the Smoke-ho car park near Blackball. Stroll up the easily-graded miner's track to overnight at the beautifully-sited Ces Clark Hut (bookings essential) now on the Pap aroa Track Great Walk. Time: 3-4 hours.
Day 2:
Clamber up to Croesus Knob (maybe early for the sunrise). Head along
the tussock tops to Mt Leitch. Visit the locked wildlife bivouac en route a
long the ridgetop to Mt Watson (1102m).
From the summit, the route dro
ps 780m down a spur to the Smoke-ho car park. Time: 3-5 hours.
