Changing the original Mt Riley/Mt Sunday trip to a completely different trip, due to the ongoing closure of Northbank and Onamalututu Roads.
An overnight trip from Marahau to Castle Rock Hut in Abel Tasman National P ark.
On Saturday we will head up to Castle Rock Hut via Holyoake Clea ring on the Inland Track. 15.1km, 5hr30 (DOC time). 730m climb. A steady climb with some steep sections through regenerating native bush, with some nice views back to the coast. Opportunity to visit th e Castle Rocks lookout 20 minutes from the hut. 8 bunk hut with plent y of space for camping.
On Sunday we have an option to do a longer lo op, taking the track down to Akersten Bay and following the Coastal Track b ack to Marahau. I expect this will take a good 8 hours. An alte rnative is to return the way we came, or even have a group doing each depen ding on numbers and group make-up.
Another alternative, i f we have sufficient numbers and a second leader, is to do a crossover thro ugh trip to Canaan Downs, with one group starting at Marahau and the other at Canaan Downs carpark, meeting in the middle at Castle Rock Hut for the n ight and doing a key swap.
