Anybody interested in joining me on the Harper Pass Route with a possibl e Mingha/Deception extension?
I'll be in CHCH and get a lift to the B oyle start on the 9th (by a friend, driving back to Nelson. I ll park my ca r in Yaldhurst, so i can hitch or bus back from Arthurs a week later. You a re welcome to share the rides in and out off CHCH). Stay Hope Kiwi Lodge on 9th. I plan to do long days, maybe camp, and complete the track in 4, max 5 days to the Arthurs Pass road end. Ideally, stay at Hurunui Hut on 10th, Kiwi Hut on 11th. Lots of daylight in early Jan! Might have to wait it out for a while near the Taramakau if the river levels on the western side are too high. So, bring spare food and books! The trip is easy (crossing the Ma in Divide East West on a historic route over the lowest saddle, 963m) but l ong, 77km, with lots of river travel and crossings.
If weather ok, ri vers low enough and energy levels high, I would continue from Aickens to Ar thurs Pass along the Deception/Mingha (=coast-to-coast) Route via Goat Pass , with a side trip to Lake Mavis. Stay a night in Arthurs Pass, hitch back to CHCH (or shuttle) on 16th. That's the plan, anyway :) It will not happen after heavy rain. The whole section is on the Te Araroa, so a tent is esse ntial!
I ll be in CHCH from 26/27th, but mostly out off range till 4t h jan. So, please contact me BEFORE 27th, or be spontaneous! :)
