Plan A: Waikakaho/Cullens' Creek Plan B:Saddle Hill from Maungatap u Saddle.
Cullens Creek is the site of gold ming in the late 1880's w hen up to 1000 miners worked the diggings. A small township developed with 3 pubs; 5 bakeries; 2 billiard saloons, a bank and a Courthouse. Only signs remain to mark the village. It is a 3 hour walk up and over Waikakaho Sadd le to the 'Village Clearing' which was the centre of activity once the mini ng moved from alluvial to quarts crushing. Then return. [DOC has a warning that the track was damged during last July's strom; but the MTB site says t hat it is passable. We shall see]
Plan B. Saddle Hill fr om Maungatpu Saddle. This old road is accessible from Pelorus Bridge and wh ile rough and slow it does save the steep slog up from the Maitai Dam. The Saddle is at 780m and from there, there is a marked track up and over the f irst "Double"(1168 m) then after a short descent up again to the second "Do uble" or Saddle Hill (1217 m) where there are radio mast and great views ba ck over Nelson and Tasman Bay. Return the same way perhaps in time for a co ffee at Pelorus or Rai Valley?
